I saw this puzzle lock for sale at Grand Illusions:

http://www.grand-illusions.com/acatalog/Impossible_Lock.html

I haven't seen it for sale at any other site, and they don't mention the designer.  Does anyone know anything about it (other than what is posted on the Grand Illusions site)?

Hmm, I'm a pretty big fan of lock puzzles and I've never seen that one.  Could be a new design.  Did you contact the website and ask?  I'd be interested in what they say.

I sent an email to Grand Illusions asking who the designer and manufacturer were, but they didn't get back to me.  I did wind up ordering it, though, so I'll have to let you guys know what I think after I've had a chance to play with it.

I'm a big fan of puzzle locks also.  If this is anything like the Dan-Lock it will be one of my favorite puzzles.

Hey Jeff,

I ordered a Dan Lock a few months ago, and at the time Dan mentioned he has created a new version, I believe he calls the original the "A" model and the new version the "B" model.  He mentioned to me that the A was a little easier to solve, where B was more for a serious puzzler.  If you have the original and love it, you might want to send Dan an email and inquire about the B version.  I don't know how they different from a solution stand point, but I do like the solving process of the original lock quite a bit!

Yeah I was talking to Dan's son in Prague and he let me mess around with the new version.  HARD!  Kicked my butt.  Cindy got a lot further along than I did with it.

I bought both versions, and the second one has a couple of extra moves. The first one is hard enough !!

Like Frank, I also have both versions and they are both proudly displayed in the collection.  The first one brings on the gray hairs and the second one just brings on more!!!!!!  The second one definitely has added frustrations but I don't want to say much more in fear of divulging too much.  I wouldn't part with either of mine.   Wink

Hi Guys

I too wondered about the new lock from Grand Illusions so ordered it.
Very different from Danlock with some nice twists in the solution.  Its final move for opening is very cute and somewhat non-intuitive.

I found the sequence of moves for solving Danlock to be more logical than for this lock, but this one can be done without looking at the solution page.

It will not unseat Danlock as the Rolls-Royce gold standard for puzzle locks, but is a cut above the standard range of Indian trick locks in quality and ingenuity.

Off the subject -- Chris, you should hook up with Stephen Chin or Dave Cooper who also reside in Austrailia..

Thanks Robert.

I have had the good fortune to purchase a Chinnyhedron or two from Stephen - fabulous piece of engineering!  Brian Young (Mr Puzzle) from the Gold Coast actually helped me purchase my Danlock (discussion now back on track!).  Don't know Dave, but would be happy to hear from him!

With respect to Jeff Chiou's original post, the designer of Impossible Lock # 2 is Rainer Popp from Augsburg, Germany - it looks like he created the lock in November 2008.  I have found a way of bypassing one of the (cuter) steps to open the lock and have emailed him to see if the lock can be set up to prevent this happening.  Will keep you posted of any developments.

Looks like a cool lock! I put it on my wishlist  Smiley

I just solved DanLock B today, definitely a great puzzle! Is A worth doing if you have done B? Sounds like there is just a bit 'extra,' so I'm guessing not.

Congrats on solving Danlock B.

Danlock A is 95% the same as B, before the extra moves kick in. So unless you want to complete a set then probably not worth getting.

Hello Chris,

Glad you like the Chinnys. I felt Chris overbid at the auctions, so I sent him 2. we are both happy now.

I am not a lock person, but I know Dave Cooper (Thargo)loves them, hes up near you , woop town Cairns , give or take an hours drive. I am sure he will enjoy talking locks with you. I just make simple puzzles off the lathe

The lock arrived this week.  I haven't been able to solve it - only got maybe the first move or two.  It seems to have pretty good quality, definitely better than most Indian-made puzzle locks.

Hi Jeff

Glad you have your hands on the new lock.  I must confess I had also made no progress with the lock for several days until my 5 year old demonstrated (by chance) the final move with the key - preconceptions learned into adulthood had prevented me seeing it!

With regards my previous post, I thought I had found a way to bypass one of the moves needed to open the lock.  With some to and fro discussions with the designer we worked out that I had not locked it properly.

Have fun with it

Best wishes
