I agree that it is very hard "not" to use magnets in a puzzlebox.  Some things are easier with them, and others just simply cannot be done without them.

The trick, however, is to not to rely on them completely.  Magnets are only one many devises at our disposal and we will miss out on other creative solutions if we use them as a crutch for every single circumstance.

  Traditionalists would say that there were no magnets in 150 year old Japaneese puzzleboxes, but I would be willing to bet that they would have used them if there were avaialable.

I want details on Ron's Ark puzzlebox.  How has it been going, and what modifications are now being included.  Give us an update on your direction Ron, if possible.

Well I'm back at it, the Arc that is. My wife has been cracking the whip, she wanted me to finish a entertainment center that she has wanted. Well it's done so now it's back to my project. I did make a change to the design to allow for a recording to be played if you can successfully open the Arc. I did not elect to use any shocking devices. I am now looking for a gold leaf kit to use on some of the trim. Has anybody got any suppliers for such a thing? I would also like to know if anyone has done any gold leafing and how it worked out.

Hey Ron,
I have not done this but I know that both David Marks and Norm Abram have done shows on gilding.  A couple of links;

A lot of links on Google search for gold leaf.

I say use gold leaf paint.  It is basically lacquer with gold dust suspended in it.  You just paint it on, and it dries like lacquer but leaves a solid gold finish.  No sense messing with extremely thin gold foil that tears or glue to adheare it.

Just a quick update on the Ark of the Covenant progress. The puzzle box is complete except for a couple of angels that I need to mount on the top of the box and some gold leafing of the trim. It now has 22 moves to open. As soon as I get it lacquered I will put some photos up.
