Hi David If you look at the 3 piece cube, you will notice that these spots are where the bars connect the opposite faces. I did not want to drill and dowel, so I created a feature of it and it came out rather nice. (Your copy is on the way in this coming week) John, "Wit is the only wall between us and the dark." Hello!
Kind of entered the forum through the back door. Have already posted some questions and received some wonderful, thorough, insightful answers.
First bought Puzzles Old and New by Slocum at a craft fair is 1986 (along with a few Tavern Puzzles). Remember my Uncle Carl's Japanese puzzle box when I was young. Puzzling sort of went on the backburner till a few years ago when I recently re-read Slocum's book, did a google search for Stewart Coffin and suddenly the whole world of puzzling reopened for me. Got slightly addicted to Ebay, sometimes spending hour upon hour searching for different types of mechanical puzzles. Of course, had to apply quite a few search screens to get rid of stuff I didn't want:
(puzzle, puzzles) -sudoku -autism -melissa -rubik -ravensburger -trek -crossword -oz -3d -jigsaw -hellraiser -playstation -dinosaur -dress -500 -1000 -500pc -jigsaw -game -1000pc -500pcs -1000pcs -photomosaics -wysocki -cola -ring -springbok -playskool -george -tuco -walt -disney -charm -crossword -tank -shrek -ninetendo -sega -pokeman -whitman -puzz -invent -fisher -beatles
Started amassing my collection of mostly older puzzles when I happened upon Cubic Dissection site. Wow ! As an amateur woodworker I really appreciated the craftsmanship that went into the puzzles.
Also enjoy collecting puzzle books almost as much as the puzzles themselves.
Still collecting, although my wife tells me that my addiction needs to slow down (starting to affect our retirement funds).
First puzzle made was Coffin's 3-piece block puzzle. Designed and machined an aluminum glue fixture to make each subassy. (Figured I would never achieve the accuracy needed otherwise.) Designed a checkerboard puzzle for my Uncle John (who also loves puzzles) where the individual checkerboard pieces spell out the letters of his name.
Don't really have a workshop of my own yet so work with my father in law's table saw and the mill at work. (Luckily my employer is pretty open to this type of activity !).
Working on funds to build the "wood workshop" next to the garage so that the woodworking tools that I HAVE accumulated in the garage have room to breathe. (Right now the Unisaw is in the corner covered up, awaiting 220V to arrive. Same with the Delta jointer.)
Really enjoy ALL aspects of puzzling.
Near-term goal: Design and make variant of Coffin's Scrambled Scorpius.
Longer term goal: Design and make puzzle box that will win Grand Prize at the IPP in SF.
Longest term goal: Heck, I don't know ! Retire to have more time for puzzling?

I moved the digression about puzzle box wood to the puzzlemakers forum. Someone might use the info down the road and I hate for it to be buried in here.

Hi there! I'm a puzzle collector from Germany and I am interested both in "twisty" puzzles as well as nice wooden assembly puzzles. Most of my favourites are high level burrs, but before I continue, may I redirect you to collection gallery webpage, which is in an early stage and to be polished when I have some time: http://puzzles.schwandtner.infoGoetz

Yeah, but the offical census was that we are somehow missing a person from that number, and of course, Eric has one labeled as "test".

I would be honoured to be (non-test) member No 100. But, not counting the test member, I would be 101, maybe a nicer number! - Goetz

Hi Everybody, My name's Ron Zezima and I'm a Radiologic Technologist (aka x-ray tech) living in Redlands, California. I've been collecting mechanical puzzles since 1998 when a co-worker brought a metal object to work that was bent so bad it looked like a plant holder! No one could remove the ring (except me), so that was the beginning of this fun little journey. Months ago, serious health issues forced me to auction off many of my favorite puzzles (with the tremendous help of Nick Baxter). Very recently, the mystery health issues have vanished without a trace, which is more than okay with me. At least I still have some cool artwork left!
