In retrospect, I could have clued pieces together and saved time and resorces, but I wanted to make a perfect Amish puzzlebox (e.g. crafted completely without glue or nails.)  Some of those pieces were a booger to cut out of one piece of wood.  I had to use a chisle on some of them.

Glad the box was appreciated.

Jeff,

I gave andrew you address, and he is sending the No 5 puzzle to you shortly.  Please let Andrew know if your address needs any adjustments.

Great puzzle. Very impressive. Packed in its original box and already shipped last week to the next person.

THANKS.

I got the puzzle box today.  HOLY @#$%&!!!   Shocked  That's definitely the most serious puzzle box I've ever seen!  I didn't get a real sense of how big and heavy it is from the postings in the gallery.  Definitely very intimidating.  I'm almost afraid to try and solve it for fear of damaging it or having it fall apart!  Almost....

Jeff,

It is a freakin big puzzle, and that was the biggest complaint among collectors.  Unfortunatley, there is a "least common denominator" piece in there where it was structurally impossilbe to make any smaller out of wood.  This required all the other pieces to match it in size.

The box could be made 1/4 the size out of metal, but I have not yet convinced Eric to reproduce them out of brass, copper and aluminum for me.

If you do take the box apart, it will initially separate into 6 panels.  It is my recommendation that you keep all pieces from each panel in a separate pile, as there are many reciprical pieces that look identical but are not.  It would be quite a challenge if such pieces got mixed up together.

Robert,

I'm surprised that the size was a complaint.  I think it's a plus  you get more value for your dollar.

You know, it reminds me of the Borg cube from "Star Trek".

I don't think I'll be disassembling any of the panels - I still can't get it open!

Jeff,

Ironically, the nickname for the No. 5 is the "borg box".  At least that is what it is called on James Strayer's gallery page.

I think the problem with the size primarily came from the fact that it took up too much space on display shelves, and collectors also figured that it could have been sold for less if it was made smaller.  I had the same problem with the grandfather clock box since it stood 16" tall.  Now I try to make all boxes under 8" in size, but that means there are some things that just can't be done in wood.

Let me get back with you in just a bit.  The last person to borrow it "Jeff Chiou" mentioned that it was sticking in a place and he could not get it open, and I have not had the time check it over to see what the issue is.

Ok, I had the chance to look at this puzzle, and it appears that a particular piece had cracked making one of the moves very difficult.  It is easy enough to fix, but I will have to take the box apart and reassemble it.  I probably will not get around to this task until later next month, once I am finished with the project I am working on.  Ron, I will notify you when it is ready for the library again.

Hi Robert,

It's been a couple years since this posting, but I was just wondering if this site is still checked, and/or if you ever had a chance to fix the puzzle's flaw; so I could possibly borrow the puzzle?  I've played with two of your puzzles, and despite owning a Domino Box a long time ago, circumstances prevented me from keeping it.  Please advise if I can ever borrow this one.  Do you know when your next, new release will be?

Best Wishes,
Ron
