Hey guys, here's a sketch pencil(5.6mm lead, with a sharpener in the clip end) I made from a blank of 6061 grade aluminum, does anyone use this style of pencil? I also made a second version, which is called 'woodworker' and doesn't have a clip but does have a faceted fittings so it won't roll off a benchtop, out of 'masur(burl) birch'  |

I think my wife would love the one in burl. She started college in art school before switching majors. Full-time mom now, but I'm trying to encourage her to stay creative.

I get the blanks from a machine shop guy in the states and he sizes them so you don't have to glue the brass tube in and he uses round stock to start with. It's not all that difficult to turn aluminum, but somewhat time consuming....sharp skew and light cuts, of course what would be ideal is if could locate a local powdercoating shop, then you can add color to an already nice piece.  |

Gold should be easier to lathe than aluminium. I will take one in pure gold. OK  |

You're motivating me to use more burls in the puzzles. Where do you get your burl from? Did you say you get the wood fromt he US?

Hey Scott, I tried making puzzles from Thuya burl but it near destroyed my planer! Very difficult to work with and of course hard to find in sizes big enough to make puzzles from but there are guys out there selling burl caps and at decent prices as well. Normally for pen blanks I try to get 'stabilized' burls there a lot more forgiving. I have a very good supplier here in Canada for them. Hey Kerry, you need nerves of steel to turn some of those burls, it's part of the allure for me though, I often wonder how some guys turn 'open segmented' vessels, have you ever seen those? |
